When my client approached me about creating a backsplash for their indoor pool and bar area, their passion for scuba diving immediately sparked my artistic vision. I wanted to capture not just the visual elements of being underwater, but that magical feeling of weightlessness and flow that every diver knows so well.
The design evolved into a dynamic composition of vertical elements that suggest both kelp forests and the mesmerizing movement of light through water. I carefully selected glass tiles in varying shades of blue, turquoise, and coral, incorporating different sizes and finishes to create depth and luminosity. Some tiles catch the light with an iridescent gleam, mimicking the way sunlight dances through the depths, while others provide the deeper, mysterious tones of the ocean’s shadows.
I chose to work with glass mosaic tiles not only for their durability in a pool environment but also for their ability to capture that ethereal underwater quality. The way they reflect and refract light adds a constantly changing dimension to the piece, much like the surface of water itself. The white cabinetry frame I designed acts as a perfect canvas, allowing the mosaic to command attention while providing practical storage for pool and bar essentials.
What truly brings me joy about this installation is how it transforms a functional space into an artistic experience that resonates deeply with my client’s passion. Every time they entertain in this space, the backsplash serves as a conversation piece that connects their indoor environment with their love of underwater exploration.
