The other day, a good friend asked me, “What do you actually do?”
My creative life began as a response to fragmentation.
In 2001, I was working in the tech world in Cambridge, Massachusetts when 9/11 ruptured the sense of normalcy around us. I watched intelligent, capable adults struggle to metabolize shock and fear. I felt it in myself. The coping mechanisms I saw — and sometimes participated in — did not soothe. They distracted.
My way through was different.
I began breaking glass.
Mosaic became a quiet ritual of reconstruction. In the slow placement of millions of shards, I found regulation. In pattern, I found steadiness. In texture, I found something my nervous system could trust.
The act of transforming fragments into wholeness became both metaphor and medicine.
That experience redirected my life.
I left the corporate world and turned toward teaching and community-based creative work. Eventually, I pursued a Master’s in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, concentrating in Arts in Education. I wanted language for what I had experienced firsthand: that slow, tactile art-making changes us physiologically and emotionally. At the time, the formal language around creative regulation and embodied healing was still emerging — but I knew art held something powerful.
For more than two decades, my work has explored that truth.
As a commissioned mosaic artist, I created installations rooted in memory, story, and transformation. Over time, my practice evolved into Mosaic Evolution Tile (M.E.T.) — handcrafted ceramic tiles that carry the layered gestures of mosaic into a refined, contemporary surface. The philosophy remained the same: nothing is wasted. Every fragment belongs.
In 2025, life asked me to slow down again. After a long season of illness, I was diagnosed with Ménière’s Disease. Vertigo reshaped my relationship to balance, stillness, and sensory input. I returned to the question that began everything: What kind of art regulates?
From that inquiry emerged MetaPainting — a mindful painting practice on textured ceramic tile where brushstroke becomes breath and repetition becomes rhythm. What began as personal recalibration expanded into MetaPainting Kits and MetaPainting Sessions, inviting others into this steady, embodied creative space.
Today, my work lives at the intersection of art, education, and nervous system awareness.
I create for the moments when life feels fragmented.
I create because slow making matters.
I create because beauty can be built from broken pieces.
Pause.
Breathe.
Place the pieces.

Artistic process
As the owner of AFS mosaics, my work is deeply inspired by the subtle and often overlooked patterns found in nature. I find beauty in the way nature weaves chaos and order together, especially in the delicate intricacies of a leaf or the shifting movement of light and shadow. These fleeting moments reveal the essence of life itself, where every detail - no matter how small - interlocks with the whole in ways both harmonious and unpredictable. In my art, I seek to capture these patterns, creating pieces that invite the viewer to look closely, to pause, and to experience a new understanding of the natural world. Each tile, each piece of glass, is carefully placed, yet together they evoke a sense of natural fluidity, a connection to the earth's dynamic beauty. My art is a reflection of the quiet elegance of nature's design, celebrating both the chaotic and the orderly forces that shape our world.

A family affair
This makes every custom installation truly unparalleled in quality and artistry. Ariel and Brian have three children who have "grown up around glass." The design studio sits right in the heart of their family home, signifying the love and care that inspires the work.
